PROJECTS

SUPPORT SPECIAL NEEDS

The foundation will assist with locating and sharing, as well as developing sports and recreational opportunities for children with both cognitive and physical disabilities.

Every child deserves an opportunity to enjoy the fun and the positive benefits of playing sports. Sports can help them build a foundation for a healthy, productive, and fulfilling life.

By teaching them the basics of team play, children can learn the value of teamwork and community. Sports can also help them to develop their self-confidence.

For children on the spectrum, sports can help improve the self-esteem and increase and improve social interaction. Sports can also be used to improve their communication and leadership skills, as well as teach them to make physical activity a part of a healthy lifestyle.

For children with disabilities, the key is finding the right program that fits their interests and accommodates their disability. There are many sports offerings to accommodate a variety of minds and bodies.

MAKING A SPLASH

The goal of the foundation is to make swimming lessons available to all children, so they gain a life-saving skill that they can eventually introduce to future generations.

A recent study sponsored by USA Swimming revealed that less than 70% of African American kids have low or no ability to swim.  Reasons may include lack of money for lessons or living in areas where there is no access to pools.

Historically, African Americans have been largely and systematically denied access to community pools.  As a result, swimming hasn’t been part of the African American recreational culture. Following race riots of the 60’s, cities did build pools in black neighborhoods, but many were too small or not deep enough to swim in, or learn to swim in. Lack of access to public pools has resulted in generations of African Americans that never learned to swim.

According to the CDC, black boys in particular, are at higher risk of drowning than other groups.  The foundation through Making a Splash grants, aims to reduce that number by subsidizing swim lessons and providing water safety resources.

FOOTBALL PLAY-HER GRANT

One goal of the foundation is to empower girls and women in football and to provide education in the game of football, as well as mentorship. One way we will do this is to establish a football camp for girls to help them develop the skills they need to play the game, as well as teaching them how to play the game safely.

PlayHer Grant: To supply helmets, cleats, and other equipment required for safety, to female football players who need financial support/sponsorship.

Today, there are over 3,500+ adult women playing organized tackle football in the US. Most have full-time jobs and pay to play.
